The World War II Nazi concentration camp Struthof at Natwiller, France in the
Alsace region. These pictures were taken in the Fall of 1999.
The concentration camp, Struthof, is above the town of
Natzwiller in the mountains.
Approaching the camp, we first discover the gas chamber
structure.
The monument to thousands killed.
The obligatory front gate. However, the ubiquitous
Arbeit macht frei is not inscribed over it, but elsewhere
at the camp it appears.
The monument as seen from the base of the camp by the
ovens looking up past the barrack emplacements. Some barracks were
burned by those wishing to cover up the past, but two were saved.
Saved also was this oven, a surreal reminder of what men
can do.
