Timeshift is a utility that takes scheduled snapshots (back-ups) of a filesystem allowing the user of a computer to roll it back to a previous, working state should a bad update or configuration change break it.

Timeshift focuses more on system files rather than personal documents.

It can be set up rather quickly:

  1. Launch Timeshift.
  2. Select RSYNC because filesystem ext4.
  3. Click Next
  4. Choose the back-up location, in my case, I have a 4Tb disk mounted as /home2.
  5. Click Next
  6. Set a schedule. Here's the default:

  7. Click Next
  8. Configuration filters. Exclude or include what you will. Here's the default:

  9. Click Finish. You might see something like this (or empty if this is your first time):
